Roger, Marion, Staff and our friendly Ghost would like to welcome you to The Virginia Ash Freehouse in Henstridge.
The Virginia Ash is in the heart of the idyllic village of Henstridge, five miles away from the historic town of Sherborne.
In 1592 Sir Walter Raleigh was given Sherborne Castle upon his return from Virginia in the Americas by Queen Elizabeth 1st.
It was reported that whilst at a local coaching inn, Sir Walter lit a pipe of tobacco.
Something that had not been seen by the landlord before.
Causing the shocked man to throw a jug of water over Sir Walter to extinguish the 'fire'.
Which is the story of how the Virginia Ash may have acquired its very unusual name. Some say that the Virginia Ash is haunted, maybe Sir Walter Raleigh still visits and enjoys the atmosphere. Which we hope all our visitors do.
At The Virginia Ash we offer a wide variety of real ales, ciders, lagers , wines and great pub food.
We also provide free WiFi!
